Our Distributed Energy and Power business has been established to help customers gain competitive advantage from energy, delivering intelligent end-to-end energy solutions that power performance, resilience and growth.

In November 2015, we acquired Panoramic Power, a global pioneer in energy management that has developed and delivered patented wireless sensor technology to deliver actionable energy insights in real time.

In May 2016, we completed the acquisition of ENER-G Cogen International Ltd, an established supplier and operator of combined heat and power (CHP) solutions.

Having completed these two important acquisitions, we now have customers in 34 countries.

We also own and operate a fleet of flexible power facilities in the UK, and continue to operate the Lincs offshore wind farm, located off the Lincolnshire coast. 


Under the Centrica Business Solutions banner, Distributed Energy and Power is working to help businesses and other large energy users to harness the power of distributed energy solutions.

Flexible power

Advances in technology and the need to decarbonise are bringing about major changes to the energy landscape as we know it. The increasing use of renewables in place of traditional centralised generation such as coal-fired plants is having a particular impact, driving the need for more local, flexible generation, to back up intermittent wind and solar.

In the UK, we operate three fast response, flexible gas-fired power stations with a total capacity of 600MW at Glanford Brigg, Peterborough and Barry.

In 2016, we announced a £180m investment programme to build a series of flexible power facilities having secured 15 year agreements for over 500MW of new capacity in the Government’s Capacity Market auction. These plants have been designed to respond to peaks in demand and will play a crucial role in securing power supplies and supporting network stability as more renewables come online.

We are also working on a pioneering local energy market trial in Cornwall that will test the use of flexible demand, generation and storage across both the domestic and business sectors.

Combined Cycle Gas Turbine

Work on the installation of a new gas turbine and major refurbishment at King’s Lynn power station started in March 2017. The plant, which has been out of service since 2012, will resume full operation in 2019.

Energy storage

We are building an energy storage facility in Barrow, North West England. At 49MW, it will be one of the largest and most sophisticated battery storage facilities of its kind and will be capable of holding enough power to meet the needs of 50,000 homes, responding to fluctuations in demand in under a second.

Peaking plants

We are building two new fast response gas-fired power plants alongside our existing power stations at Peterborough and Brigg. Rated at 50MW each, the plants will run independently of the existing plant and will use gas engines to generate power for approximately 50,000 homes within two minutes. The new plants are set to be operational in 2018.

Jorge Pikunic - Managing Director, Distributed Energy & Power

Jorge leads Centrica’s new international Distributed Energy & Power business, established to deliver distributed energy solutions for large energy users as part of a more flexible energy landscape.

He joined Centrica in 2010, first heading up the Group’s strategy team before taking over as Managing Director of British Gas’ Smart Metering business, where he lead the roll-out of smart meters to over one million residential customers.

Born in Venezuela, Jorge is an engineer and holds a MSc and PhD in Chemical Engineering. He was also a Research Fellow at the University of Oxford before joining McKinsey & Company where he advised a number of institutions in energy and other sectors. He has also worked for Procter & Gamble and PDVSA (Venezuelan national oil company), and was a Board Director of Smart Energy GB.
